Push Up Needle

Push Up Needle

Push up needles lift the die off the tape from below as the pick up tool engages from above — a coordinated motion that helps the die release cleanly without damage. UPT supplies push up needles, needle holders and needle caps as a complete system, in tungsten carbide, high-speed steel, plastic or ceramic, sized to your die and equipment.

Push up needle for die bonding

Needle Types & Materials

UPT push up needles are available in tungsten carbide (standard), high-speed steel, and plastic (Torlon) or ceramic for specific process requirements. Beyond the standard straight needle, several tip structures are available to match different tape and die handling conditions:

  • Standard — straight needle, angled tip
  • Flat-tip — flat-ground tip for broader contact area
  • Stepped — stepped shoulder for controlled insertion depth
  • Base-mounted — needle with an integrated base for specific holder configurations
  • Crown — multi-point crown tip (4-point or 6-point) for distributing lift force across a wider contact area
  • Dual-tip — two-point needle for balanced lift
  • Modular crown — assembled multi-needle crown configuration

Needle geometry is defined by angle (A°), tip radius (R), length (L) and diameter (D) — these four parameters determine how the needle fits your die thickness and tape handling equipment.

Needle Holder

Needle holders mount one or more push up needles to the bonding equipment. UPT designs single-needle and multi-needle holder configurations based on your die dimensions — larger die typically require a multi-needle layout to distribute lift force evenly and avoid localized stress on the die.

To specify a needle holder, match the tool style to your equipment from our reference configurations, or send us a sample — then provide the die size so we can confirm the needle layout.

Needle Cap

Needle caps work together with the needle holder to expand the tape and release the die. Caps are typically made from aluminum alloy with a black surface treatment, or carbon steel with black chromium or titanium coating — material selection affects wear resistance and static behavior during the release process.

As with needle holders, cap configuration depends on the die size and needle layout — provide the same details and our engineers will confirm the matching cap design.
